He grew up in Fayetteville, NC and now resides long with his wife Mary Cam, about fifteen miles north of the city in a community called Carolina Lakes. They have two daughters - Shelle, 23, who is in the masters program of accounting at North Carolina State University and Katie, 19, who attends Barnard College in New York City. He graduated with a degree in hotel restaurant management from Asheville Buncombe Technical Institute in 1975. He went on to work for Morrison's Cafeteria Chain for a year before opening two Dairy Queens, along with his brother, in 1976. He has built and owned several Dairy Queens over the past 33 years, and presently has a Dairy Queen in Sanford, NC along with some commercial real estate investments. When time allows, Lion Dan enjoys a game of golf and just hanging out with his wife at their lake house.
